October was National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month...
HOWEVER
Every Month at VGS is Bullying Prevention Awareness Month!
Also, it is important to note that National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month continues. This truly is a 365-day-a-year effort. We want to share some resources for you to use in your schools. We encourage you to visit StopBullying.gov and take a look at the new Bullying Prevention Training Course. The KnowBullying app from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is a free bullying prevention tool for educators and families, and the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments has more information about how to foster a safe and healthy learning environment for all students.

RAM PRIDE!

Regular School Day

8:15 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
(Doors Open at 7:45 a.m.)

Regular school attendance is critical to a child’s educational progress. Unless a child is ill or contagious (See guidelines on p. 19-20), or any other reason for which the child may be excused from school, he/she should be in attendance at school.  All absences must be authorized by notifying the school in advance, or at the time of a child’s absence (a message may be left on the VGS answering machine outside of regular school-day hours to notify the school of a student absence).

Valid causes for absences have been defined by the Board of Education as illness, observance of a religious holiday, death in the immediate family, family emergency, and situations beyond the control of the students as that would affect the safety or health of the student (such as a doctor’s/dentist’s appointment).

Parents/Guardians are strongly encouraged to schedule regular doctor and dentist appointments on non-attendance days.  A student with an approved absence from school (i.e., religious holiday, etc.) will have an equal opportunity to make up any schoolwork requirements missed due to the absence.  Students will receive a reasonable amount of time to make up schoolwork missed due to an excused absence.

A student may not be allowed to make up school work missed due to an unexcused absence. An excused absence will not be granted for family vacations, shopping, oversleeping, or other similar situations.  Any time a child must be absent from school, the parent should call the school office prior to 9:30 a.m., 658-6611.

A student is “truant” when absent from school without valid cause.  Chronic truancy exists when a student is truant 5% or more of the previous 176 days of regular attendance.

ISBE will again administer the Illinois 5Essentials Survey this year. Teachers, students, and parents can take the survey any time between Nov. 16 and Jan. 16, 2017.
